Breeding Objectives
Our objectives are to make the most of the commercial advantages of the breed. Fertility, conformation and shedding ability are the base we want to work from. We also look for early growth rates and ability to finish lambs quickly on paddock feed. With a focus on pastoral production we are very keen to produce a free moving strechy animals. We have one of the best shedding lines White Dorper sheep and it is important to us to maintain it that way.
Fertility is important and our aim is to wean 120% lambs every mating. Our ewes are remated depending on conditions immediately after weaning and each ewe needs to wean lambs on each mating. Ability to wean a good lamb every time a ewe is put to a ram is important to us. As we do not produce any wool we like our ewes to be getting in lamb and weaning them all year. By lambing all year round we can provide good quality fresh young rams all year.
The obvious profit driver after the lambs hit the ground is growth rate. This is a big part of our selection criteria as if ewe or ram lambs can’t go on after weaning quickly they are not going to perform in the commercial world.
We are starting to collect lamb plan data to provide extra information for prospective buyers.
